Google finally launched Android 11

After months of numerous updates, Google finally launched Android 11 on 8th September 2020. The update first rolled out on a few selected Pixel, Realme, Oneplus, Oppo, and Xiaomi phones with other partners soon to follow. Fortunately or unfortunately, Android 11 seems to be quite similar to Android 10. Therefore, you might not notice any significant changes when you first upgrade your device. However, this doesn’t mean that there aren’t any new useful features or improvements. Rather, the new Android 11 comes with several cosmetic, technical, and even security improvements.

Here is a list of some of Android 11’s best new features that will definitely make you want to upgrade.

1. A Redesigned Power Menu

The most significant visual change that comes with the Android 11 are the options that appear when you go to the power menu. In the older Android version, you would have options to lock your phone, turn it off, or restart it. But with this latest update, you can now even quickly access your default debit or credit card if you have already set that up.

Plus, you will even be able to access your tickets and boarding passes here if you have added them through your Google Pay account.

2. Quick Access to Smart Devices

Managing multiple smart devices in your home is quite challenging – especially when Google Assistant just cannot seem to comprehend what you’re saying. But with the Android 11, this is no longer a problem! Google’s solution is that now you can access controls for all your smart devices from the power button menu.

All you have to do is hold the power button for a few seconds till the quick access tiles appear. These tiles will allow you to toggle on switches for TVs, lights, locks, vacuums, thermostats, and other smart devices installed in your home.

3. Improved Media Controls

In the older Android versions, if you played music and dragged down the notification panel, you would get a notification for music controls, right? The good thing is that in Android 11, these media controls are now incorporated into the quick setting menu itself. If you simply pull down the notification drawer, you’ll be able to see music controls right next to your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi tiles. This feature adds a sophisticated look to the Android devices. It even works with video streaming apps like YouTube that you’ve mirrored on other viewing devices.

Note that this update is not just about enhancing the visuals but also have technical elements as well. For instance, you can pick which device plays music – a feature that works really well with Bluetooth earbuds and speakers. Moreover, if you drag down the menu a little more, you’ll get more options such as giving thumbs up to a song without opening the music app itself.

4. Conversation Bubbles

Facebook Messenger has been using the floating Chat head bubbles since 2013. People have loved these floating bubbles because they allowed them to quickly view their conversations on Messenger. Well, Google has now introduced the same feature for other messaging apps, naming it Bubbles. Now, you will be able to view your messages appear as floating bubbles on your screen. However, this feature isn’t compatible with messaging apps such as Twitter and Instagram DMs.

On the bottom right of the notification drawer, you’ll be able to view a circle icon and a small arrow. If the arrow is pointing towards the bubble, touching it will make your conversation appear like a bubble. However, if the arrow points away from the bubble, touching it will open your conversation in the app. You can group the bubbles of different messaging apps together. For instance, you can club a WhatsApp bubble with a Telegram bubble.

5. In-Built Screen Recording

Android might be late to join the party, but it’s definitely here now! So, if you want to flaunt your gaming skills, you can easily record your screen without needing an external app. To record your screen, drag down the notification panel, and tap the Screen Recording tile. In some cases, you might have to swipe left to view this tile.

Once you tap the tile, you will see a three-second timer, after which your device will start screen recording. You can opt to record audio using device audio or through the microphone. To stop screen recording, drag down the notification drawer and tap on the Screen Record notification. You can now view the recording, edit it, delete it, or even share it.

6. Dark Mode Scheduling Option

The Android 11 comes with a dark mode scheduling option that is great for people with visual sensitivities. A great advantage of this feature is that it helps to save on battery life. However, the dark mode might not be beneficial for everyone throughout the day. To counter this problem, Google has introduced a dark mode scheduling option in Android 11.

To get this feature, go to Settings > Display > Dark theme and switch it on. Here, you can decide whether you want to keep the dark mode on throughout the day or schedule for a specific time. For instance, you can have it switched on from sunset to sunrise.

7. One-Time Permission and Auto-Reset

Google has faced some serious allegations regarding the negligence of its user’s privacy and security. Fortunately, with Android 11, Google is now taking these issues more seriously and is providing its users with increased security and privacy. For instance, now Google allows you to provide apps with one-time access to certain features such as a microphone and camera.

Moreover, the Android 11 update will also automatically reset permissions given to an app, if it hasn’t been used for a long period.
